MTV to offer world first look at Microsoft's new Xbox in global deal

LONDON - Microsoft has stolen a march on Sony PlayStation by signing a deal with MTV to unveil its new Xbox 360 in a half-hour show presented by 'Lord of the Rings' star Elijah Wood, which will air globally on MTV in Europe, North America and Asia in May.

Sony's new games console, the PlayStation3, is not expected to make its public debut until a week later at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, May 18-20.

Wood, who describes himself as an "avid gamer", will be accompanied by other celebrities including hot Las Vegas band The Killers.

The programme is called 'MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed' and will get its first airing on the US eastern seaboard at 9.30pm, and will be scheduled locally in the following 24 hours. The deal also includes coverage on .

The Xbox 360, as it is due to be called, is arriving sooner than many game experts expected when it debuts later this year. The original Xbox will only have been on the shelves for three-and-a-half years, which is much shorter than the normal five-year lifespan of a games console.

However, according to some observers, its arrival has been signalled by Microsoft halting producting of the Xbox, despite huge demand, although the computer giant denies this. There are estimated to be only 2.2m Xboxes left unsold with jut 400,000 destined for Europe. Microsoft is especially keen to move on because it makes a loss on every console sold.

There is no news on any games titles yet, but if the launch of the Xbox is anything to go by there will be strong titles from the start. The original Xbox launched with 'Halo', which more than three years later is still considered the best first-person shooter on any console.

Peter Moore, Microsoft Xbox corporate vice-president of worldwide marketing and publishing, said: "We are ecstatic about our alliance with MTV and unveiling a videogame platform in a way that has never been done."

The show will emphasise enhancements to the Xbox Live online game feature.
