The deal gives MSNBC a huge boost on the microblogging service. Its own Twitter account, @MSNBC, has only 27,382 followers. It will add its own news to the existing headlines available on @BreakingNews, which are taken from a wide range of sources.
No cash will exchange hands, but MSNBC.com will become the first client of a news subscription newswire service BNO is launching, the BNO News Wire, which will focus on providing breaking news coverage to news companies around the world.
Dutch firm BNO News launched @BreakingNews in 2007 combining original reporting and aggregated news headlines and has gone on to become one of the most followed news feeds on Twitter.
With the launch of the news wire service, BNO News says it will shift attention away from @BreakingNews to focus on building and delivering its new enhanced service to media companies and publishers.
Michael van Poppel, founder and president of BNO News, said: "The BNO News Wire Service will try to redefine the news wire service as seen today in the news industry and adapt to the needs of the 21st century."
Jennifer Sizemore, msnbc.com editor-in-chief. "BNO News has built its audience following these principles and we are excited to use our partnership with them to build on the fastest, most comprehensive feed of breaking news on Twitter."
With its 1,435,910 followers @BreakingNews is ranked number 78 on the list of the most followed Twitter accounts.
The deal is similar to the one CNN signed earlier this year when it took control of the @cnnbrk rolling news service on Twitter.
At the time that account had around 1m follower, but it has now gone on to attract more than 2.8m. The CNNbrk account was started by James Cox who now works for CNN.
