MSN steps up desktop search battle with toolbar suite

LONDON - MSN has launched a range of new toolbars to incorporate desktop search.

Users can search their Windows desktops for any type of document, media file or email message using the MSN Toolbar Suite beta, which is the latest development in MSN's investment in search.

The search tools, free to download , take the technology of web searching and apply it to the hard drive. It is currently available to users in the US with global rollout planned for 2005.

The new toolbar includes an updated version of the MSN Toolbar for Microsoft Explorer, the MSN Desktop appears on the Microsoft Windows desktop taskbar and new MSN Toolbars appear in Microsoft Office Outlook and Windows Explorer.

Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice-president from the MSN Information Services and Merchant Platform division at Microsoft, said: "With MSN Toolbar Suite, consumers can now search their desktops from within the popular applications on their PCs."

He added: "By delivering fast, precise answers with familiar technology, MSN is taking desktop information discovery to a new level."
