It is a tit-for-tat comeback to Google's launch of Google Desktop Search, which enables people to search their email, personal files, web history and instant message conversations in addition to the web.
With the announcement, MSN is adding new muscle to its rivalry with Google, which owns Blogger.com after acquiring Pyra Labs in February 2003, the company that created technology for writing online journals. It also owns Images, which organises digital images on desktops after it acquired Picasa in July 2004.
, the blogging service, will allow consumers to create their own personal space on the web. It sits alongside MSN's upgrades to its free email service with a beta version of MSN Messenger 7.0 incorporating new features, and updates to MSN Hotmail.
The updated MSN Messenger includes features allowing users to alert a contact with sound effects, or with animated pictures. MSN has recently introduced 250MB inboxes to Hotmail in nine markets and a photo upload tool and recently unveiled its new free email account Hotmail.co.uk.
