The latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures show the supermarket sector growing strongly at 5.8%.

While growth has slowed from the April figure of 6.2%, it still represents a robust performance, with the fall being attributed to lower grocery inflation.

Among the big four retailers, Sainsbury's achieved 7.8% growth and Asda 7.2%, increasing their market shares to 16.3% and 17.1% respectively.

In growth terms, Tesco lagged behind its rivals with 4.7%. It also lost market share, from 31.1% last year to 30.8%.

Waitrose, which is introducing an 'Essentials' cheaper range, is showing signs of combatting recessionary pressures with growth of 4%.

Discount retailers Aldi, Netto and Lidl have taken their combined market share up to 6.1%, compared with 5.9% last year, but their combined growth rate of 9.4% has slowed.
