Monopoly explores potential of TV extension

Hasbro is throwing its weight behind iconic board game Monopoly with a multi-strand promotional drive.

A spokeswoman said plans were at an early stage, but the toy-maker was considering a TV show that would see players compete for real money.

Definite plans for this year include the launch of Monopoly's first pre-school edition, a licensed SpongeBob SquarePants game and a DVD version.

Hasbro is also planning to launch a campaign called 'The forgotten rule' to remind players that, although they think they know how to play the game, they often make mistakes by not consulting the rulebook. The drive is set to be backed by the first Monopoly World Championships.

In 2005, Hasbro allowed consumers to make the game more personal when it launched My Monopoly online, enabling people to add place names and photos to the board for £100.

The game has sold more than 200m copies since its launch in 1935.
