To coincide with the start of the new football season, Trinity Mirror has launched a standalone football website. The homepage contains the latest English Premier League updates, breaking news and analysis from all the Mirror writers.

What's happened?
Launch of football website

The Mirror has positioned its archived photos as a point of difference from its numerous website competitors. For fans there is access to memorable moments in football history, at both club and international level. There are options to order archive photos as prints, or simply to print a copy of match reports from the paper of the day. As a Spurs fan, I think this is the only time I will read about them winning the league. While it is a nice feature, the archives have limited appeal, because it is current news that football fans will be interested in on a daily basis.

The new site does have a plethora of breaking news and analysis - the highlight being a live news feed. The site does seem to have a lot going on and could do with a tweak in the layout. The video module is a welcome addition - the daily segment I watched had Mirror journalist Darren Lewis talking about the day's transfer gossip. Lewis is a regular pundit on

Sky Sports, so it is good to see the Mirror take him in-house. A disappointment is the lack of international club news - I am going to have to revert back to rivals Sky Sports or The Guardian to find out La Liga results.

The Mirror says it will attract 1.8 million unique users at launch, with further growth to follow. According to comScore, this figure would place it above football sites run by The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Sun. This ambitious figure is questionable. However, to help achieve these numbers the Mirror has announced the site launch with TV spots, presence at Premier League games, press, search engine optimisation and paid search ads.

What is good?
Video module with daily news.

What could be better?
A tweet update of club news would be welcome.

Would I book my client into this?

With a couple of high-profile clients involved in the World Cup next year, MirrorFootball will be on the consideration list.
