Ministry of Mayhem experiment slammed for endangering children's lives

LONDON - ITV's Saturday morning children's show 'Ministry of Mayhem' has been rapped by TV watchdogs for conducting a scientific experiment, which caused a presenter to burn his hand, while leaving out the 'don't try this at home' caution.

In total, four viewers complained to Ofcom about the sketch on 'The Lab' science spot, which featured an actor playing the part of "The Doc" challenging a Brighton University science lecturer to set fire to methane bubbles.

As the sketch went on, "The Doc" filled both his hands with bubbles and set alight to them to be declared winner of the challenge, despite burning his hand in the process.

Parents were worried that chidren at home would attempt to copy the sketch with household items like a gas camping stove.

ITV claimed that the experiments were always conducted in a specially constructed lab and the products used were not household items, in order to prevent children copying the sketches.

However, the network did admit that the "Don't try this at home" warning was not given on this occasion.

Ofcom found the 'Ministry of Mayhem' in breach of the children and imitative behavior section of the code.

"We thought that the combination of foamy bubbles and flames were likely to appeal greatly to children," it said.

Separately, ITV was investigated for a Motorola sponsorship credit showing a tropical storm, which appeared on ITV Films.

In total, 11 viewers complained about the spot broadcast on December 27 and shortly after, because they considered it ill-judged and insensitive in the wake of the Boxing Day tsunami.

Another 12 viewers complained about an edition of 'You've Been Framed' broadcast on New Year's Day, which featured a sequence of beach mishaps including large waves.

Ofcom found that ITV conducted proper reviews of its output and that the broadcast of these programmes was an unfortunate oversight. It consequently ruled the matter resolved.
