Kershaw, who founded new business Kershaw Partners last month, will continue to work with his founding company on a part-time consultancy basis and remains a shareholder. The group expects to announce the appointment of an external non-executive chairman in due course.

, chief executive of Concerto, added: "Mike stepping down as chair of the group has been a long time in the planning. When the shareholders initiated a change programme over two years ago it was agreed then that the group would appoint a non-executive chairman. Mike wholly supports this strategy and agreed to continue as chairman on an interim basis, and now is the right time to move towards an external appointment."

Kershaw said he felt it was time to leave Concerto and "look to the next chapter". He explained: "The change process we embarked on has seen the company grow from strength to strength. What I see today is a vastly improved business with a great future ahead. It has always been my intention to step back once the process of change was well underway and to create headroom for a new non-executive chairman."
