The appointment, effective from 1 January, means the broadcaster will now look to fill its chief executive post, which has effectively been up for grabs since earlier this year, when executive chairman Sir Michael Grade announced he would leave at the end of 2009.
Clasper was appointed to the ITV board in January 2006 and is currently chairman of the Audit committee as well as a member of the Nominations committee.
Earlier this month, Sir George Russell, deputy chairman of ITV, announced he would step down at the end of the year as the broadcaster prepares for a change in leadership in 2010, with Grade making way for former Asda boss Archie Norman, who takes on the role of chairman.
The announcement confirmed that ITV will have entirely fresh leadership in place in 2010. Both Russell and Grade will make way for Norman and a chief executive who has yet to be appointed.
ITV has been looking for a new chief executive since April, when Grade announced his intention to leave. Talks with possible successor Tony Ball, former boss of BSkyB, broke down in September.
