Microsoft unveils pay-as-you-go European music service

LONDON - Microsoft has beaten Apple to the launch of a pay-as-you-go European music download service, offering 200,000 tracks that can be bought for as little as 83p each.

The is part of MSN Music Club, where users can download music by paying for a subscription.

The service has been launched by MSN.co.uk and the digital distribution company OD2, with music from the five major labels: Warner, BMG, Universal, Sony and EMI, as well as independents.

Apple has already launched a similar service in the US called iTunes, where users with Macintosh computers can download songs for 99 cents each. The service has been a huge success, with 6.5m songs downloaded already, but the launch of a European version has been delayed because of difficulties clearing rights in each country.

As well as launching the new download service, Microsoft has changed the look of MSN Music Club, making it easier to use.

Amanda Anthony, MSN business marketing manager, said: "The MSN Music Club has always proved very popular with our users, and we have an active subscriber base. But the pay-as-you-go offering provides an even simpler way to buy digital music. We鈥檙e convinced that -- just like in the mobile industry -- this payment option will attract a different profile of user to the site."
