Overall, Microsoft is laying off 150 of its 2,880 UK jobs, in the second phase of its plan, announced in January, to cut 5,000 posts worldwide by June 2010.
However, it is believed the technology giant is planning to cut more posts. In an e-mail to US employees, chief executive Steve Ballmer said the company was "mostly, but not all done, with its planned 5,000 job eliminations". It aims to do this as quickly as possible to "reduce uncertainty for employees".
A spokesman for Microsoft UK declined to comment on the specific UK job losses, but said: "As part of the plan we announced in January to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, Microsoft is commencing consultation to remove additional positions across several areas of the company. We are working closely with affected employees to help them through this difficult transition.
The spokesman continued: "While job reductions are always difficult, we need to rebalance resources against our priorities in the current climate and we will continue to evaluate our business to ensure that our investments are aligned to current and future revenue opportunities.
"We believe in the strength of the company, our ability to continue delivering value to customers and our approach to long-term growth."
