Mexico City is hoping for a major tourism boost from FITA: International Tourism Fair of the Americas, which occurs from 23 to 26 September in the Global Class Centre.

Mexico's minister of tourism Mr Alejandro Rojas Díaz Durán hopes that the fair will stand on the world stage next to ITB in Berlin and Pow Wow in the United States.

He told Event: "We are proud to announce that Mexico City is a clean and secure city. After being struck by the influenza AH1N1 (mostly known as swine flu), Mexico City had to take extreme measures. One of them was to create an economic fund of £6m for impulsing the industry again, and also provide for tourists a medical and legal insurance during their stay in Mexico City.

"Now, we can say that we are again the most visited destination in México, with more than six million tourists that visited us during the summer, and earning more than £3m in tourism profits."

Next year Mexico City will be running a series of events to mark its 200 years since the beginning of the Independence War and the centenary of the Mexican Revolution.
