MEC, part of WPP's media investment company, GroupM, has also made operations director Toby Jenner and head of strategy Steve Hatch joint managing directors. Director of strategy Stuart Sullivan-Martin has beome chief strategy officer.
As the CEO in charge of MEC's UK operation, George will have responsibility for managing all aspects of the UK business, including its MEC Sponsorship, MEC Interaction and MEC Manchester divisions. He will be supported in his new role by the three other appointees.
The promotions come in the wake of a buoyant period for MEC in the UK. The media agency picked up a number of new business wins, including Transport for London, Monster.com, Nintendo, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Blockbuster. These culminated in last month's £38m Danone win.
George said: "The restructure of the management team, together with the senior appointments we have made and will continue to make, is designed to further strengthen our positioning for 2007 onwards. The fact that we have been able to promote from within shows the strength in depth of the agency board and indeed of the whole agency."
Steve Allan, GroupM's UK chief executive, said: "I am extremely proud of Tom and his team's achievements over the past year. Under Tom's leadership I've seen the agency grow in strength and confidence and I very much look forward to working with him in his new role."
