Media Week 30 under 30: Yu-Hsuan Lin, Zenith Optimedia

What’s something every media industry person should do before they’re 30?

In my opinion every media industry person should rotate and gain as much experience as they can within specifically media execution (PPC, Social, video, display etc.) before they are 30.

Conceptually, when working on a marketing strategy, the sky is the limit, but practically we are confined to what the media and the technology allow us to do. In my experience working in this industry so far, is that many great ideas or media plans are compromised by poor execution. If I may use the film ‘Ocean 11‘, (excuse me if you haven’t seen this film) as an analogy to illustrate my point - the plan they came up with on robbing the casino is indeed ingenious but really execution was the key to them pulling it off.

Moreover, through the experience and understanding the nitty gritty of the media execution side, someone will have a more solid foundation and understanding of what’s possible. I believe this is especially true when technology becomes even more disruptive in the future.

If you could only take one thing to a desert island, what would you choose and why?

A Survival manual.

To be honest, weirdly I have long been thinking about the likes of a zombie apocalypse or a major crisis happening. If I was actually trapped on a desert island, I would take the full advantage of this opportunity to become a second Bear Grylls. Sort of echoing my response to the first question, this is my media execution here. I would learn how to look for water, make fire, seek food and identify poisonous plants etc. At the same time, I would probably start wood crafting, building houses and boats.

I think this might actually be quite enjoyable and at the same time I think this will also provide me with a fresh perspective on things.

Hopefully, I would survive.
