Media Week 30 under 30: Stephanie Walton, R/GA

What’s something every media industry person should do before they’re 30? ?

Before a media industry person turns 30, they should work brand-side - for a small business if at all possible. Since many young people in media enter the agency world right out of university, they often miss this experience. But I think it is essential, even if it's just freelance work for your mom's shop or a friend's start up. ?

When working with many different clients and huge corporations, it is very easy to lose sight of what we are meant to do in our industry - tell the stories of our clients in a way that will make a difference to their business. In media specifically, we are working with significant budgets. It is very easy to mentally turn these budgets into "monopoly money" and forget that where this money goes shapes businesses and culture. ?

My work at a tech start-up before I went to the agency side and then freelancing for small business since then helped me to understand what it's like to be a client and experience how the success/failure of a campaign has a significant impact on the lives of the individuals involved.

Reminding ourselves of this can only make us better at serving our agency clients and gives us a more well-rounded view of the advertising and business world.?

If you could only take one thing to a desert island, what would it be?

you choose and why? Jack Sparrow. He'd know where all the  is hidden from the last time he was there.
