Media Week 30 under 30: Madeleine Shimmen, M2M

what’s something every media industry person should do before they’re 30?

Every media industry person should have burst the bubble of familiarity and lived life with an element of danger by the time they are 30.

This can be brought to life in several ways; it’s about exploring the world – the big stuff and the little stuff. It’s about interacting with new and different people who will challenge us on our views.  It’s about taking the time to pause and observe people and their environments, noticing patterns, making connections. Most importantly it’s about being curious about the stories going on around us.

In reality this exploration could take the form of a secondment, hot-desking, or even going to a shop floor or factory.  All of this serves to provide a rich canvas for brave and creative problem solving which in turn will catapult our media industry forwards.

If you could take one thing to a desert island, what would would you choose and why?

I would say books and if it had to be one book it would probably be Robinson Crusoe. Not only could I steal all of his tips and tricks of survival, but as most people will acknowledge there is a feeling when you turn the last page of a good book as if you have lost a good friend.  It is this magic of companionship that would keep me sane in the wilderness.
