McCann Erickson has prised back Gosper to become its US president a year after he was lured to TBWA following a nine-month stint as McCann's New York office general manager.
McCann Erickson WorldGroup CEO John Dooner, whom Gosper reports to, said that he was delighted to see the Australian return to an expanded role, where he will focus on McCann New York and also work with key multinational accounts in the US.
US reports said the larger role and a direct reporting line to Dooner are believed to have been key factors in persuading Gosper to return to McCanns.
Meanwhile, McCann Erickson has also announce the promotion of North American operations regional director Eric Kershin to the role of chief operating officer of McCann WorldGroup, also with a direct reporting line to Dooner.
Gosper's previous roles have included a stint as co-chairman of Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper.
He returns to McCanns at a troubled time for Interpublic as it faces the prospect of being broken up or sold off, after the US financial regulator earlier this week refused to kill a proposal by an activist shareholder to sell off the company.
Interpublic had been trying to exclude activist shareholder Charles Miller's "Maximum Value Resolution" from its annual general meeting. The proposal calls on the board of Interpublic to arrange for its "prompt sale" to the highest bidder.
The news followed last week's revelation by Interpublic that it had uncovered errors resulting from "instances of falsified books and records, violations of laws, regulations and company policies, misappropriation of assets, and inappropriate customer charges and dealings with vendors".
