Hughes joined Mars in 2000 and held several petcare marketing roles in Australia before moving to the UK in 2007.
Mars has already initiated the search for her successor. In an unusual move for the company, it is looking for external candidates.
In February, Mars moved the £15m strategic planning account for its petcare business out of MediaCom and into ZenithOptimedia.
