Mars advertises on new Lycos IM site

Confectionery giant Mars and technology company AMD are the first advertisers on portal Lycos UK's new instant messenger service.

Mars is advertising Chocollect (www.chocollect.com), its on-pack SMS promotion, with a miniature Pacman-style game in the conversation frame of the instant messaging application, while AMD is sponsoring the service.

There are three ad formats available on the service - half-size banners on the conversation frames, special-sized banners on the main interface and a promotion space on the main interface content tab.

Lycos UK aims to compete with Microsoft, AOL and Yahoo! with its instant-messaging service, which launched at the end of April. While AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger limit users to interacting with others on the same service, Lycos Messenger allows users to aggregate their MSN and Yahoo! contact lists.

There are two versions of Lycos' messaging service available: the web-based Lycos Anywhere, which can be used by PCs with firewall restrictions, and Lycos Messenger, which requires a software download.

"Lycos Messenger looks to break down boundaries and remove restrictions," said Alex Kovach, managing director of Lycos UK.
