Marlboro unveils mid-priced cigarette brand Bright Leaf

LONDON - Marlboro is launching a new brand called Bright Leaf in a bid to compete in the mid-priced cigarette market.

Marlboro unveils mid-priced cigarette brand Bright Leaf

Marlboro Bright Leaf is Philip Morris' first new cigarette brand in two years and has been created specially for the UK market. It will go on sale from 1 September at the recommended retail price of £5.39 for a 20-pack and £2.75 for a pack of 10.

The 10mg tar cigarette will be priced 8% lower than its red, gold, silver and menthol variants. It will compete with Benson & Hedges Silver.

Unlike its other variants, Bright Leaf is made from Virginia blend tobacco which is the preferred taste of 91% of UK smokers, according to Marlboro. The tagline inside the box reads: "Style meets flavour. Marlboro Bright Leaf. Designed to be different."

The Bright Leaf pack, which has a tactile finish, opens at the side in the style of a Zippo lighter with a click.

Philip Morris marketing manager Zoe Smith said: ‘Marlboro Bright Leaf is for a different type of adult smoker than the traditional Malboro smoker, especially those who may not like the taste of a regular Marlboro.'
