MailOnline jumps 19% leapfrogging Guardian.co.uk to head web league

LONDON - Associated's MailOnline has leapfrogged Guardian.co.uk and Telegraph.co.uk to become the most popular newspaper website in the UK, according to today's ABCe figures for June.

In a busy month for all UK newspaper sites, MailOnline, which incorporates content from the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday newspapers, recorded its highest traffic since launch, up 19.2% to 29,373,379 unique users.

Its mix of news and sport in June, including its ongoing campaign for computer hacker Gary McKinnon to avoid extradition to the US and comprehensive coverage of Wimbledon tennis, contributed to an 83.4% increase year on year.

Elsewhere, most sites reported growth in the summer month, which began with Gordon Brown's Cabinet reshuffle and went on to include the outbreak of swine flu and death of Michael Jackson.The Guardian's site posted one of its own strongest performances to date, with a 6.5% monthly lift to 28,966,942.

Similarly, The Telegraph saw its monthly users increase 7.6% to 27,175,233, while Timesonline.co.uk experienced a more modest 4% hike to 21,216,797.

June also proved a reasonable month for the tabloid websites, with TheSun.co.uk up 9.2% to 25,062,845 and Mirror.co.uk up 8.6% to 9,442,900.

IN&M's Independent.co.uk was the only site to post a drop in users in June, down 2.3% to 9,352,369. It follows an 8% drop in May and signals an end to the monthly increases gained at the start of the year.
