Mail could be back on the rails after Royal Mail talks

LONDON – Royal Mail is in talks with a number of train companies, including First Group, about a possible return of the recently abandoned mail trains.

Royal Mail ran its last travelling post office in January of this year, ending 166 years of service. But according to The Financial Times, it is in talks with six or seven rail companies about bringing the operation back.

Royal Mail has denied that a deal is imminent, although it has admitted that talks are progressing after several meetings and GB Railfreight, a subsidiary of First Group, which has confirmed that it is in talks.

Royal Mail made the controversial decision earlier this year to scrap rail as a means for delivering post and to use road and air transport instead, ending its agreement with rail freight operator EWS.

The move was attacked by trade unionists and environmentalists who said that it contrasted with government policy to get more freight on the railways, relieving the overcrowded road network.

Royal Mail later claimed that the decision was a commercial, rather than policy one.

Both Royal Mail and GB Railfreight declined to comment further.
