Magic beats Heart to London's number one slot

LONDON - Emap's Magic 105.4 has knocked Heart off the number one slot for commercial radio in London.

The station won 5.9% share in the capital's listening, with its Chrysalis-owned competitor coming in at 5.4%. GCap's Capital re-claimed the number one breakfast show, with Johnny Vaughan gaining a 5% rise in audience, beating Jamie and Harriet at Heart.

Overall the BBC continues to dominate the market, posting a record 56% share and 33.46m reach. Radio 2 is still the most listened to station with 13.25m listeners, up on the year and quarter, and Chris Moyles at Radio 1 has won his best ever audience figures at 7.06m listeners - nearly three quarters of a million more than this time last year.

However Radio 3 suffered, losing listeners compared to the year and quarter, making only 1.9m listeners in Q1, though its new schedule has not had time to affect the Rajar statistics.

Of the national commercial stations Talksport has reported an increase in weekly reach of 13% year on year, with total listening hours up 12% year on year to 20.4m. Virgin meanwhile remained steady with a flat quarter and year result, maintaining its national share at 1.5%.

Though total national commercial listening rose marginally to 10.7%, local radio suffered the most with a drop of 1.4% to 31.4% in share.

Digital listening continues to rise with an increase in listening through the internet and digital television as well as the ownership of DAB radios, up 3.5% since Q4 2006, and MP3 players, on which 18.4% of adults have listened to a podcast - up 1% in the quarter.
