Madonna accused of stealing Semtex brand name

LONDON - Pop queen Madonna has come under fire from Czech company Explosia for pinching the brand name of one of its best-known explosives, Semtex, in setting up her limited company Semtex Girls.

Madonna, currently enjoying chart success with her latest album 'Confessions on a Dancefloor' and a number one single with 'Sorry', set up the company this week but Explosia has only just caught wind of the news and is considering legal action over copyright infringement.

"She never asked our permission to use the name Semtex," Ladislav Lehky, director of the Research Centre which owns the state-owned company Explosia, said. "She appears to be carrying out some kind of advertising stunt."

Lawyers for the Czech company have been asked to safeguard the Semtex name from any misuse by the 'Sorry' singer.

Why Kabbalah-devotee Madonna has set up the company is anyone's guess. The only indication of her intentions of the company came from a quote by the singer on music website .

"The Semtex Girl is a girl who is dynamic, a girl who explodes, who doesn't know the meaning of nine to five, a girl who is unstoppable and who doesn't take no for an answer. And has excellent taste," she is quoted as saying before stunning the interviewer with, "Men can also be Semtex Girls".

Production of the plastic explosive Semtex began in the 1960s, but did not come to public prominence until the 1980s when it earned a reputation as the preferred explosive for terrorists, especially the Provisional IRA, because it was very hard to detect.

Explosia was keen to add that it now produces only small amounts of Semtex for use by the Army and other reputable companies.
