The Wireless Group has bought stations in Chesterfield, Wolverhampton and Bolton/Bury, expanding its existing portfolio of 13 local radio stations.
MacKenzie, chairman and chief executive of The Wireless Group, said: "This is a superb acquisition for Wireless that fits well with our strategy of growing a profitable local radio group. There will be considerable benefits for all stakeholders in our companies as we strengthen further Wireless's position as a real force in local radio in the UK."
The company also announced today that it had taken a further 6% stake in a company called DRG, which owns the London III digital multiplex licence, bringing its stake in the company to 23.58%. It already owns an 80% stake in the London II multiplex and a stake in the Central Scotland and Aberdeen multiplex licences.
MacKenzie said that The Wireless Group was serious about investing in digital radio.
"Listeners clearly want digital radio as evidenced by the record number of sets sold in the run-up to Christmas and the industry is expecting increasing sales this year. It is the hottest must-have consumer product in the sector," he said.
