
In the 13 weeks to 3 July, the retailer recorded total UK sales up 4.8%, and like-for-like sales up 3.6%. General merchandise was up 6%, while the food category was up 1.5%.
M&S claimed it had outperformed the food market as a result of customers continuing to "return to quality".
The retailer drove innovation within the category, launching 570 new products, such as grill and summer dessert ranges.
During the quarter, M&S Direct benefited from a sales rise of 49%, with its multi-channel ordering service, Shop your way, extended to more than 400 stores.

"We have continued to grow market share across all parts of the business, as customers recognised the strength of the Marks & Spencer brand and the great quality and value it represents."
According to Kantar, M&S increased its market share to 10.7% in the clothing and footwear sector for the 12 weeks ending 23 May, compared with 10.2% over the same period the previous year.
The company said that customers "responded well" to stronger fashions and value, but warned that future trading could be challenging.
The M&S statement said: "We have made a good start to the financial year, but following the recent Budget and the actions proposed to reduce the national deficit, including the increase in VAT, we are cautious about the outlook for consumer confidence and spending, and continue to manage the business accordingly."
