Lycos is also investigating increasing its storage size of free (currently 10M) and paid-for email (between 100M and 1Gb), Wessel van Rensburg, Lycos UK email and mobile product manager, said.
The announcement follows a wider trend to move services away from the desktop where Microsoft has an established stronghold.
Lycos UK's launch is planned for mid-September and comes ahead of Google's plans to launch Gmail, currently in beta testing, which the search giant describes as a new kind of webmail.
Users of the new Lycos service will be able to drag and drop files from Windows directly into a new online file storage drive, as well as being able to access email and SMS tools.
Users can store any kind of file on the online drive and Lycos has introduced synchronisation of the internet-based mail with Outlook.
Van Rensburg said: "As internet connection speeds become faster and PC users become more mobile, we see there being demand for a virtual PC. The new interface is a step in that direction."
He adds: "It makes the use of web-based email and storage more compelling, because not only can it can be accessed and managed from any PC, but it can be done by using familiar software -- anywhere in the world. Users will find Lycos UK's new service is rather more portable than the average PC."
