The service (classmates.lycos.co.uk), which goes live this week, includes a database of 35,000 educational establishments, including primary and secondary schools, universities and colleges.
Users will be able to leave messages in guest books, meet in a chatroom and contact individuals through free SMS and email. They will also receive SMS and email notifications when new users sign up. Other services include a photo album and school reunion tool kit that lets users broadcast invitations.
Alex Kovach, managing director of Lycos UK & Ireland, said the service will grow to include other communities, such as former work colleagues, neighbours and servicemen.
To promote the service, ads including banners and skyscrapers will run on Lycos this week, while a keyword campaign is set to run on search engines Google and Overture.
