LoveFilm joins government-backed school film club

LONDON - LoveFilm.com is to partner the government funded after-school initiative backed by Emma Thompson and Sir Alan Parker that will allow school children to see classic and blockbuster films ranging from 'Lawrence Of Arabia' to 'Saving Private Ryan'.

The project has been set up by Beeban Kidron, director of 'Bridget Jones's Diary 2' and 'Hippie, Hippie Shake', and educationalist Lindsay Mackie. It will offer children access to free weekly films via the website through which will supply the films.

Members and teachers will have a choice of up to 60,000 films across a wide variety of genres. The nationwide rollout follows a successful trial within 250 UK schools and further interest from 1,000 more and aims to operate in 7,000 schools over the next three years.

Filmclub will feature film synopses, discussion topics and trailers with opportunities for children to post their own reviews, to enter competitions and gain industry insight through interactive webchats.

Films on offer include a wide variety of classics, foreign films, blockbusters and period drama ranging from 'A League of Their Own', 'A Matter of Life And Death', 'La Dolce Vita' 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'The Red Shoes' to 'Grease, 'Saving Private Ryan', 'School of Rock' and 'Sense And Sensibility'.

Participating schools hold weekly film screenings and will also receive visits from industry professionals to inspire children about all aspects of film, including acting, directing and set design.

Fliss White, LoveFilm's head of brand marketing, said: "LoveFilm is delighted to continue its involvement with Filmclub, delivering over 60,000 DVDs to schoolchildren throughout the UK. As the biggest online film community in Europe, LoveFilm shares the Filmclub philosophy that film can broaden our minds in extraordinary and unexpected ways.

Filmclub co-founder Kidron said: "Filmclub would not have been able to do its pilot without Lovefilm's involvement -- nor could we roll out without their continued generosity. Our members are watching a range and quality of films that would otherwise be unavailable to them -- all you need to do is to look at the reviews that they write on the site to understand their excitement."
