London gets dedicated 24-hour station to boost tourism

LONDON - The capital is to get its own dedicated 24-hour television station on Sky called London TV, which will promote the capital's arts and entertainment scene to Londoners who don't explore their city and visitors who want to make the most of their stay.

It will be shown on Sky channel 166, as well as in hotel rooms, and tourism chiefs hope to strike a deal with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to feature it on inbound London flights.

The station is being launched by tourism body Visit London, which is working with production company Enteraction TV, and will begin broadcasting on July 12.

David Campbell, chief executive of Visit London, said the new channel would be accessible to half the capital's population, as well as 7.3m homes across the UK and a number of European homes.

"If you live in the capital, you often feel guilty that you're not making the most of everything the city has to offer. Now you don't even have to get off the sofa to get some inspirational ideas straight to your living room," Campbell said.

Inspiration will be provided by locals and celebrities, who will paint their own personal portraits of the capital by sharing insider tips and their most memorable London experiences.

Claire Richmond, who joined Enteraction TV as director of programmes for London TV, brings a wealth of experience to the channel after working for Endemol for five years on programmes such as 'Changing Rooms' and 'Ready Steady Cook'.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: "London TV will be a real help to Londoners getting out and experiencing more of what London has to offer."

Advertising will be kept to a minimum during the first few months of the launch, with London attractions, museums, hotels and restaurants being the main advertisers.

Large travel organisations like British Airways and brands that are synonymous with London are being lined up to advertise on the channel after the preview period ends in September.
