Livingstone to launch London-based freesheet

LONDON - London mayor Ken Livingstone is launching a publication to inform Londoners about the Greater London Authority's activities and achievements, after a Mori poll found that most people in the city felt poorly informed about its actions.

The paper, called The Londoner, launches next month. It will be published six times a year and will be distributed free to all 3m homes in the capital.

The newspaper will cost £1.8m to produce, a cost that Livingstone defended, saying it will save money on public consultation documents and leaflets.

Some commentators have suggested that the title is being launched to challenge the Evening Standard, because the title of the bi-monthly the same as that of a column in the daily newspaper.

Livingstone fell out with the Standard earlier this year after it reported he had manhandled his girlfriend Emma Beal at a party, and pushed a Standard journalist off a wall. However, Livingstone and the Standard are now understood to have made up.
