London Evening Standard to join digital music operators

LONDON - The London Evening Standard is to launch a digital media service giving readers access to new music prior to release.

The London Music Network will include a combination of CDs and online listening, which will be available free with the Evening Standard.

The online service will feature 4Play technology, whch allows people to listen to new tracks in their entirety up to four times.

The launch comes at a time when the music industry is concerned that free CDs have a negative impact on record sales and devalue their currency.

The Evening Standard says its London Music Network will provide a winning solution, saying it will champion new music, record labels and artists.

If readers like what they hear, they then have the option to buy the music via the London Music Network website where new albums will be added to a 4Play jukebox each Thursday. This can be accessed with an "unlock code" published in the Evening Standard's Metro Life magazine.

The service has been developed for the Evening Standard using BigTime TV and BT's digital technology platform, BT Rich Media.

David Smyth, chief rock and pop critic for the Evening Standard, said: "Newspaper covermounts as they exist do little to proclaim the value of good music to their readers. The London Music Network is an innovative way to lead listeners directly to the great new sounds that we are writing about every week."

The website will go live midday on Thursday , just as the Evening Standard releases the 'Fashion Rock' CD, a "multimedia experience" celebrating London Fashion Week and showcasing this season's most exciting music talent.
