The first app goes live this week and will feature a range of editorial content, including news, sport, business and entertainment, which users will be able to share and post on Facebook and Twitter.

It will be updated 24 hours a day with content from the printed issue of the newspaper as well as features and news unique to the app.

The app has been sponsored by British Airways, which will be the sole advertiser for a two-month period.

The second app will replicate content from Friday's ES Magazine. It will not have a sole sponsor but is looking to attract a number of brand advertisers. Its launch date has not yet been set.

The Evening Standard's service follows the launch of iPad apps from, among others, Metro, , the Financial Times, the Daily Express, and The Times.
