London 2012 loses marketing director Magliano

LONDON - David Magliano is to resign as London 2012 marketing director this week, and is leaving without a job to go to. He will take the rest of the year off and plans to return to full-time work next year.

Following his departure, the London 2012 marketing team will be slimmed down from 14 to two for about six months, ahead of the formation of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).

LOCOG has begun its search for a chief executive, to be in place by the end of the year. A management team will then be recruited, including a top marketer.

Magliano's final task has been to strike a deal with the British Olympic Association over the rights to use official Olympic trademarks, including the rings.

International Olympic Committee regulations state that domestic sponsors of the 2012 Games can not leverage their association until after contracts for Beijing 2008 expire. However, Magliano's deal with the BOA will let Games sponsors use the rings once a contract is signed.
