A document issued by Locog and coordinated by the Cabinet Office says there could be "drop outs" in internet provision and internet service providers (ISPs) could introduce caps to deal with increased data usage.

It states: "It is possible that internet services may be slower during the Games or in very severe cases there may be drop outs due to an increased number of people accessing the internet."

"In addition, ISPs may introduce data caps during peak times to try and spread the loading and give a more equal service to their entire customer base. However, this has not yet been confirmed by these [providers] and we hope to have more information nearer to Games time."

The document is titled 'Preparing your business for the Games' and offers advice to British companies planning for the Olympics. It suggests they check their contractual agreement with their internet provider, consider increasing their service bandwidth and avoid activities like video-streaming which reduce network capacity.

The Olympics are also expected to bring travel chaos to London, with the opening weekend seeing congestion levels soar 33% and traffic speeds reduced to an estimated 12mph. .
