Listeners flock to BBC radio sites as downloads grow

LONDON - A record 6.15m unique users visited BBC radio websites in November, and 48% of them used the BBC Radio Player, amassing 6.2m listening hours.

The November figures are the second month of online radio listening figures that the BBC has published.

The broadcaster adds up website listens and listening hours from live and on-demand listening.

The figures revealed that Chris Moyles' Radio 1 'Breakfast Show' topped November's list with 395,299 listens, knocking Radio 4's 'The Archers' into second place.

The only other non-Radio 1 programming in the top 10 was Jonathan Ross's show on Radio 2.

The trial of downloads, whereby some programmes were made available as MP3 files, was hailed as a success. Episodes of Radio 4's 'In Our Time' were available to download for seven days after broadcast, and there were 70,000 downloads made of them.

The series is hosted by Melvyn Bragg and he and his guests explore a range of subjects such as the origins of life and the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Some listeners were using programmes such as iPodder to automatically search out new programmes available to download.
