The 30-year-old Lachlan Murdoch is already co-chairman of the paper with his father Rupert, as well as recently being named deputy chief operating officer of the News Corporation.
Chandler, a 29-year veteran of the tabloid, has been publisher of the paper since 1999. Chandler, 54, started his career with News Corp in the UK and moved to the US in 1974 to launch The Star. He joined the Post in 1978. Prior to that, he was a journalist on the title and became editor-in-chief of the Post in 1993.
Chandler was one of the last remaining executives who had not been appointed by the younger Murdoch.
As chairman, Lachlan Murdoch had already made his mark on the paper. In April 2001, the Post's editor-in-chief, Xana Antunes, a Chandler appointee, was replaced by Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the Sydney Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, who worked closely with Lachlan.
In July, another Lachlan appointment was made with the arrival of Geoff Booth as the Post's general manager. He had previously been financial controller of a News Corp newspaper operation.
Chandler is to become chief executive of the Natural Energy Solutions Corporation, a health-related media business founded last year by Chandler's fiancee, Erika Schwartz.
The Post currently has a daily circulation of 563,000, which has been boosted by a price-cutting campaign launched at the end of 2000 which saw the paper drop its price to 25 cents.
