King becomes new chairman of RAB

Media veteran Martina King has joined the Radio Advertising Bureau as chairman and voiced her optimism for the future of commercial radio.

The former head of Capital Radio and European managing director for Yahoo! said that radio complemented rather than competed with online, and she was confident in the trade body's ability to convert that confidence into financial gain.

"For any sector to do well you need a number of changes to collide at the same time in order to create a movement - then you can start to see things shift," she said.

"Radio is one of the only media that can successfully operate after convergence."

King also revealed she sought the blessing of Douglas McArthur - the former RAB chief executive who was passed over for the role of chief executive at the RadioCentre - before accepting the job.
