Kidnapped reporter to be freed after cleric intervenes

LONDON - Sunday Telegraph journalist James Brandon, who was taken captive by militants in southern Iraq earlier today, is set to be released.

The journalist will be freed following mediation from the office of the radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose forces are fighting US and Iraqi defence forces in the holy city of Najaf.

The kidnappers threatened to kill Brandon unless the US pulled its troops out of Najaf. But it has been reported that a videotape has been made available, which shows one of the captors confirming Brandon will be released.

According to Sky News and the BBC this morning, militants entered the Hotel Al-Diafa in Basra, where Brandon was staying, and demanded to see the guest book. They then went upstairs and, following gun shots, the journalist was seen being dragged from the building.

Matthew d'Ancona, the deputy editor of the Sunday Telegraph, told the Press Association: "James Brandon was in Basra filing material for this Sunday's newspaper among other projects. We are pursuing his situation with the greatest concern."

Brandon, who is in Iraq working as a freelance journalist, has filed stories for the Scotsman and the Independent as well as the Sunday Telegraph.
