Spring was set to become PPA chairman in January, but she left her role as chief executive of Future Publishing last month as part of a restructure, and stepped down from the PPA board last week.

Hand will replace outgoing chairman Charles Reed, group managing director of William Reed Business Media, when he takes up the role of chairman at the PPA Chairman's Reception on 6 February 2012.

Hand is currently chairman of the b2b data and information service Dods and has acted as a special adviser to Hearst Magazines UK during the merger of Hachette UK and the National Magazine Company.

At Hachette since January 2002, Hand led the publisher's bid for Attic Futura, publisher of the now defunct teen magazine Sugar, in July 2002. Hachette then took control of the monthly glossy Elle, after Emap backed out of their joint venture.

Hand left his position as chief executive of Emap in 2001, following Emap's aborted bid to enter the US. After buying US Petersen magazines for £720m, Emap sold the business in 2001 at a loss.

Hand said: "I am delighted to be named chairman of the PPA. I look forward to working with PPA chief executive Barry McIlheney and his team in leading and serving this fantastic industry, which I am proud to have been a part of for the last 30 years."

The PPA is the member organisation for around 200 publishing companies, who collectively produce more than 2,500 consumer and business magazines and journals, as well as digital media, data products and events

Reed said: "It has been a privilege to have been PPA chairman for the last two years. While many challenges remain, I am confident that the PPA is in very good shape to meet these challenges and opportunities going forward."
