Kellogg joins health movement and cuts salt in Corn Flakes brands

LONDON - Kellogg is reducing the amount of salt in its three most popular cereal brands by 25% after pressure from health campaigners and taste tests revealed consumers prefer less salt in their cereal.

From this week, Kellogg's Corn Flakes will contain 0.55g of salt for each 30g bowl and Frosties and Crunchy Nut Cornflakes will have 0.35g a bowl -- a reduction of 25% salt for each brand.

The cereal giant conducted blind taste tests in October last year and participants found Kellogg's Corn Flakes with less salt to be tastiest.

It marks the biggest change in the Corn Flakes recipe in its 99-year history and comes as industry group, the Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers, is rallying to reduce salt levels by 10% by the end of 2005.

A typical 30g serving of Kellogg's Corn Flakes will now contain 9% of the Guideline Daily Amount of salt, while Frosties and Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes contain 6% each.

Consumers will be alerted to the new guideline amounts by a prominent on-pack flash symbol indicating the reductions.

Penelope Gilbert, nutritionalist for salt reduction campaign group Consensus Action on Salt and Health, welcomed Kellogg's decision.

"We are very pleased," she said. "We now look forward to seeing reductions in their other products."

Kellogg's has had a salt reduction programme in place since 1998 as well as supporting the ACFM initiative to reduce salt levels in cereals by 10% by the end of 2005.
