Kellogg to highlight sugar, salt and fat levels on cereals

LONDON - Kellogg is to introduce clearer sugar, salt and fat labelling to its cereal packets and snack bars, but will not adopt the 'traffic light' coding system advocated by the Food Standards Agency.

The labelling will be displayed on the front of its cereal packets for the first time in response to public demand, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph. Kellogg's cereal products include Special K, Cornflakes, Coco Pops and Frosties.

Kellogg claims to be the first food manufacturer to include easy-to-read guideline daily amounts in chart form, showing the quantities of seven nutrients contained in a typical bowl.

GDA are a broader guide to food content than Recommended Daily Amounts, which are only a guide to vitamins and minerals.

Alyson Greenhalgh-Ball, health and wellbeing manager for Kellogg, said the company has conducted extensive consumer research on various types of nutritional information.

"The GDA counter we've adopted proved engaging as well as the clearest and most accurate way of providing consumers with the information they want."

The packs will not include information about how the cereals contribute to children's diets.
