
A previous political secretary to Margaret Thatcher, Whittingdale has been chair of the Culture Select Committee since 2005. He was appointed as the shadow culture secretary from 2002-2003 and again from 2005-2006.
Speaking of his time in opposition to parliamentary magazine House, Whittingdale said: "Select committee chairmen are able to influence policy now. If your party is in opposition, I think it's the best job you can do, and being chairman of the culture, media and sport committee is certainly the job I have most enjoyed."
Whittingdale added that he has attended "some fantastic events" through his role as culture chair.
