Jack Bauer to return as Fox plans 24 TV movie

LONDON - Fox is planning to bring back special agent Jack Bauer in a special two-hour '24' TV movie that will air ahead of the forthcoming seventh season to bridge the two-year gap caused by the US writer's strike, which hit the show hard.

The movie prequel of the real-time drama is due to air in the US in autumn and will feature a story line set between series six and seven.

Season seven has been delayed after the writer's strike stopped production for over three months. At the time the strike began on November 5, Fox decided not to air a partial version of series seven with the eight completed episodes it had produced before staff walked out.

However, production of series seven is understood to be continuing from next month as writers are now back at work after voting to end the strike last month.

There is no clue yet as to whether it will also take place in real-time. The show '24' usually takes place over a 24-hour period.

The Writer's Guild of America agreed to a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which gives writers residual payments for shows streamed over the internet and secures the union's jurisdiction for programming created for the web. Previously writers received nothing for online sales.

Government agent Jack Bauer, played by actor Kiefer Sutherland, returns in the seventh series of '24', which takes place in Washington and features Cherry Jones, the first female US president.

Series seven is due to air on the Fox network in the US in January 2009 and will come to the UK on SkyOne later that year.
