Fox goes for immediate DVD release of 24 one day after season finale

LONDON - Fox is releasing the seventh season of hit counter-terrorism drama '24' on DVD tomorrow in the US, the morning after the finale airs on TV.

Twentieth Century Fox said that '24' is the first TV series to be immediately released on DVD and Blu-ray disc after the season finale.

The release is an experiment, made possible in part by last season's writer's strike.

Typically TV shows are released on DVD months after they are shown on air, but Fox tried an accelerated strategy last November with '24: Redemption', a two hour TV film, starring Robert Carlyle alongside Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer, which reached stores two days after it was televised.

DVD has been a particularly important market for the counter-terrorist show and Fox has sold more than 7.5m copies of '24' seasons on DVD.

Most seasons cannot be released on DVD immediately after their finales because the discs take eight to 12 weeks to manufacture and producers frequently deliver episodes only a week before they are aired.

'24' was ready months in advance because Fox delayed the seventh season for a full year when the writer's strike interrupted production at the end of 2007. Fox filled the gap with '24: Redemption', which set the scene for the current series.

The DVD has not been heavily promoted in advance to prevent it cutting into the audience for the prime-time finale but ads for it will be aired during the programme.

The season seven finale will air as a double bill in the UK on May 25 on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD.

The season is set to draw to a dramatic close with Jack left "fighting for his country, his family and his life" after being infected by a terrorist bio weapon having been betrayed by former CTU colleague and friend Tony Almeida played by Carlos Bernard.

Howard Gordon, executive producer on '24', said Jack ends day seven "with more to live for and therefore more to lose, at least on an emotional level, than at any time since day one".

'24' is set to return for an eighth series that will include a move to New York and the return of the disbanded CTU.

What, if any, Bauer's role is unclear although fans in the US will know many of the answers after tonight's finale.
