ITV3 claims launch success as it beats out Living and E4

LONDON – ITV is claiming a success for its new channel, ITV3, which made a strong start in its first week and saw it become the sixth most watched channel in multichannel homes, ahead of rivals Living TV and E4.

The new ITV channel, aimed at the 35-plus market, ranked 11th among all satellite and terrestrial channels over the week, with an average 1.2% audience share and a total of 6.7m viewers.

The early numbers show the drama-based channel is more successful than predecessor Plus, which attracted an average share of 0.7% this year to date.

By far the best day for ITV3 was its launch on November 1, with a total of 3.5% of the audience share, making it the second most watched channel in multi-channel homes behind Living TV.

The previously unseen detective drama 'Rebus', which featured 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' star John Hannah, managed an impressive 492,000 viewers, peaking at 555,000, or a 3.7% and 3.9% share respectively.

ITV3 also beat E4 and BBC Three's launches, which garnered 2.4% and 1.3% respectively.

In terms of its 35-plus target audience, ITV3 was in 10th position and was beaten by Sky One, Sky Sports, UKTV Gold and its sister channel ITV2.

In peak time, the 7pm to midnight slot, ITV3 averaged a 1.5% share of viewing across all hours last week, putting it in 9th place overall behind the five terrestrial channels, ITV2, Sky One and, because of the success of 'Little Britain', BBC Three.

Overall, the broadcaster notched up an impressive 16 programmes delivering more than 100,000 viewers with detective drama proving the most popular genre.
