ITV wins blockbuster TV rights as Warners deal is inked

LONDON – ITV has snapped up the rights to a string of blockbusters in a movie deal with Warner Bros, which will see it screen 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'Troy' alongside 'The Matrix Revolutions' and Tom Cruise's 'The Last Samurai'.

The licencing deal with Warner Bros international television distribution arm includes upcoming movies, such as 'Oceans 12' and library films, which will be broadcast on ITV1, ITV2 and the soon-to-be-launched ITV3.

Under the new deal, ITV will have access to films from Warner Bros' 2003, 2004 and 2005 theatrical slates. Other films included as part of the deal include 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', 'The Matrix Reloaded', and 'Alexander'.

Warner Bros' vast feature film library is also included in the deal, which contains old favourites such as 'The Fugitive', 'Lethal Weapon' and 'The Matrix'.

Nigel Pickard, director of programmes for ITV, said: "This deal offers an incredible slate of top-flight films from the hugely successful Warner Bros picture stable. We are delighted to have secured these films for ITV's family of channels and look forward to screening them for our viewers."

ITV3 is to be launched on November 1 2004 and is aimed at the 35-plus audience.
