This week, it was reported that fewer than 1,000 viewers tuned in to a high-profile Worthington Cup semi-final clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers -- the minimum amount needed to register on official ratings body Barb's scale.
The pay-TV broadcaster, jointly owned by Granada and Carlton Communications, says the report was untrue and had been erroneously leaked to journalists. The network claims there was an average audience of 85,000 and a peak of 105,000 during the match.
ITV Digital said: "The story is completely untrue, the game actually averaged an official Barb rating of 105,000. On top of this figure, many more tens of thousands of people watched the game in pubs and bars that also have ITV Digital."
