Free digital TV by April as ITV <BR>and BBC close to inking deal

LONDON - Viewers could have 20 free-to-air digital TV channels available as soon as April as the BBC and ITV are understood to be close to finalising a deal on the launch of a planned entry-level set-top box.

The move, which has been talked about for some time, would bring free digital TV to a mass UK audience, ensuring that the UK continues to lead the world in the take-up of digital television.

The terrestrial broadcasters have been in talks since November about a plan to produce a cheap set-top box, which will carry up to 20 television channels, at a cost of £100 with no prohibitive subscription fees.

Sources close to the negotiations are reported to have said that the broadcasters are weeks away from agreeing on a plan. The consortium also includes Channel 4 and Channel 5, with Granada Media and Carlton Communications negotiating on behalf of ITV.

ITV Digital is set to be the main beneficiary of such a deal. Set-top box producers Pace Technology and Nokia are already developing the products.

The government wants the whole of the UK to have access to digital television by 2010.
